Alice Nielsen and the Gayety of Nations by Dall Wilson

Alice Nielsen, "Southern Queen of Song," was born in Nashville and bred in Kansas City. She sang on the streets as a child before taking the vaudeville trail to San Francisco where she became a star in Tivoli's repertory production of Balfe's "Satanella." Hired by America's top group The Bostonians, Nielsen became a national hit in Victor Herbert's "The Serenade." Forming her own Alice Nielsen Company she dominated musical theatre until 1901 in London, where she jumped into grand opera in Italy. Returning to London a Covent Garden star in "La Boheme" with Caruso and in Mozart, she toured America. Nielsen joined with Nordica to create a new opera company which inspired LA to declare artistic independence, and inspired Boston to build Boston Opera House in 1909. Tragically it was sunk by a corrupt manager after WW1. Nielsen began a concert career of great popularity, selling out Carnegie Hall and the Chautauqua tours. Alice Nielsen became Americana as an icon of artistic integrity.
