At age six, Zoë Rarefield lost her mother, Ruthie, in a car accident. Devan Jamming rescues the little girl and soon becomes her adopted step-brother. Undersized, non-speaking, mourning, Zoë never forgets her mom. She has an epiphany when she hears a radio preacher??s rhapsody about The Rapture. She discovers the purpose of her life: to rise body and soul, fully alive, to join her mother in heaven. At age thirteen, Zoë abandons her life in the Jamming home to wander the back country outside Spring Creek, South Dakota, near the Black Hills. She exhumes Ruthie??s skeleton and keeps one of her mother??s ribs for good luck and reburies the skull under her favorite tree. Living by her wits, filching food and clothes, Zoë survives a rape attempt by a fundamentalist Rapture preacher who pursues her throughout the story. Soon, she encounters the spirit of Kateri Teckawitha, the first Native American saint, who becomes her steward. Soon she meets Ink??p??du??da, the spirit of a Lakota warrior. “Inky” encourages her to snare souls as they leave dying bodies until she gathers enough to carry her to heaven, like Santa??s reindeer. Zoë lands a job in a nursing home where she seizes and imprisons “great” souls. She becomes more impatient every day because she must rise to heaven before she is sixteen, still a virgin, She discovers a recipe, ‘Aphrodisiac for Your Angel?? that guarantees she will “soar off to eternity with her Angel.” Inky confirms that this is the fastest way to get to heaven, especially if Devan helps her. She begins gathering ingredients for the celestial love potion. Devan returns to Spring Creek with his girlfriend Laurel. They??d met an old Hunkpapa man, Wakanda, who led them into Anpetu Mountain in search of his family mausoleum. They find it, but they stumble onto a cavern filled with nuclear waste tanks. Devan and Laurel decide to film the tanks and broadcast the images over the internet. Zoë stows away in Devan??s truck and races down inside radioactive Anpetu before he can stop her. Inside the cavern, while Devan films the tanks, she meets “Ketchup,” her nemesis preacher, and Wink Lamb, a demolitions expert. They are mercenaries employed by the owners of the nuclear waste who plan to blow up boulders on the edge of the cavern. Zoë escapes them, fleeing deeper inside the mountain and into a laboratory run by Vikram Kapoor, a rogue Indian nuclear bio-physicist, and manager of the waste storage. He claims to have invented a panacea for all human and animal ills. Zoë is convinced that Kapoor is her true Angel. In the meantime, Devan is shot by Lamb. Zoë loves Devan more even than her mother in heaven, so she abandons Angel and tries to save Devan. Lamb captures her and nearly kills her. Wakanda shows up and frees Zoë while Lamb sets the charges. Laurel drags Devan out of the mountain and Kapoor and Zoë plunge into his safe haven where they drink the potion. It works. As she sacrifices her virginity to her Angel, the mountain shudders. Lightning from Kapoor??s equipment strikes the lovers, sending their consciousnesses out of their bodies, into the sky. When they return to earth, they find that Zoë is pregnant and that Anpetu Mountain has imploded. Three days later, they trek out of the mountain. Zoë grieves that her Angel could not carry her up to her mother in heaven, but she is eager to bear her Angel??s baby and to grow her own soul “great” enough to deserve to rise, body and soul, with her little one, to Ruthie in heaven.
