Blick's Condition by Steve Hurl

Blick's Condition is a dark humour novel set in the world of medicine. Norris Blick is a modern-day misfit, whose life is thwarted by his domineering father, Dr. Thaddeus Blick. With intriguing plots and overtones of Tom Sharpe farce, the book is divided into three parts. Norris Blick Comes of Age, Blick on the Rocks and Dr. Blick, heal thy self. Blick's Condition for the most part is a roller coaster ride on a journey from pre-pubescent childhood through to early adulthood. Exploding onto the scene having chopped up a dead body, taken up smoking, smeared blood over himself and losing his virginity. 'I'm not damaged. I'm different.' This twister of a story deals with some of the complex arguments within the discussion of Nature versus Nurture. It will take you through the conflicting work of NHS politics and finance, the underworld as well as an agonising review of relationships. You will not be disappointed that you gave this exciting new author a look, only that you don't have an immediate sequel to read once you put this one down Blick's Condition is thrilling, dark and humorous, it coins 'page- turner' as a genre and whatever your mood, the storytelling will keep you fully engrossed. 'I guarantee you won't look at ER or any of the other medical TV soap operas the same after reading this book.' ***** Patrick Jardine 'Having recently completed this highly entertaining and humorous contemporary novel, I'd like to share some of the more memorable moments. After having possibly the most unusual 18th birthday; we see the often self-destructive Norris Blick soldier on, trying desperately to find meaning to his life. Along the way we are enlightened by his keen diagnostic instincts which, on occasion, hinder more than help him. Written a little in a style that pays homage to the likes of Tom Sharpe and Terry Pratchett, the book slips along at a moderate pace to begin with and then takes you on a rip snorting laughter filled conclusion. There were a few cringe worthy moments, most notably Inspector Manly and an early morning surprise for poor Norris. Also notable is Nick Sadler, the hospital chief executive, and Mr Maggs the hospital accountant. Together they form a modern-day Laurel and Hardy double act with the antagonistic role being taken by "Dr" Sadler (he's not a medical doctor). Some of the more humorous scenes contain these two as they attempt to close the hospital down for unscrupulous property developer Oscar Sommers. There are others but I'd hate to give anything away. The characters are nicely rounded and 3-dimensional. The scenario's run from the sombre, macabre, to the downright hilarious. There's a fair smattering of medical jargon that does not detract from the story and helps in part to enlighten the layman. I guarantee you won't look at ER or any of the other medical TV soap operas the same after reading this book. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a mixture of subtle and slapstick humourl.'
