Checkout Chi: pay with your mind by (Benny) Ben Harris

Checkout Chi is the first new effect from Ben Harris in ages. And, it's been worth the wait.

Checkout Chi will drop the jaws of your audiences when YOU PAY for the restaurant bill, bar tab, groceries, gasoline, movie tickets, or what have you--WITH YOUR MIND. No cash, no credit cards, just your mind!

And, it's genuine: The vendor gets paid. A receipt is issued. All is above board.

Seriously, this is the kind of impromptu magic that makes reputations. The moment arising from a real-world situation (having to pay the bill), and the solution (paying the bill with magic), proving your mastery over the incredible world of technology.

Here's an example of exactly what occurs:

You and a buddy from work, let's call him Bill, are finishing up a few plates of burgers and fries at Rodriguez's. The beers were cool and refreshing, the salsa a dream. Heading out, Ci Ci welcomes you at the checkout - she's tallying the bill.

"Multi-tasking..." you say, trying to be witty.
"That's $40 neat, amigo," she says.
You begin tapping down your pockets, looking for your wallet.
"Cash or charge?" She appends.
"Got your wallet, Bill?" You ask.
"Dude, it's in the car," he says.
"Well, Ci Ci, here's what we'll have to do..." you say. "Add the tip, rounding the bill up to an even $50.00, will you."
"Thanks. Done. Cash or charge?" she insists.

Unable to locate your wallet or obtain any help from Bill, you say:

"Not cash, Ci Ci. Not charge, Ci Ci. But Chi, Ci Ci."

Placing your hands to your temples, rubbing gentle circles, you concentrate, quietly staring at the charge-card scanner. After a few seconds - and to everyone's surprise and hushed tones - it comes to life indicating TRANSACTION IN PROGRESS. Then, after a few more seconds the read-out changes to read APPROVED. The cash register spits out a receipt. Ci Ci hands this to you, shaking her head in disbelief. Of course, Bill and the onlookers are a-gasp.

"I'll get it next time," he insists, shaking his head.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," you mutter, having heard that before.
