A good opener that is intriguing, has a huge visual impact, quick, easy, and can be performed regardless of the size or the style of the show is not always easy to come by. When David released The Optical Opener he had no idea that it would be so wildly popular. It is an effect that David has used for quite a long time, but it is not his first application for the Thatcher Illusion. David released the effect as he did because it is a great opening effect for any show. But that is kind of the issue. It is for a show. It is not something that can be apparently done impromptu (unless, of course, you put the images on your electronic device).

Back in 2001 Brad Burt produced David Eldridge's booklet, Mind Control. In the booklet are David's thoughts on Equivoque, or The Magician's Choice Force. Brad said, "(the effects David has created using Equivoque) are subtle and maximally deceptive, and deliver a kind of pure effect that can be the highlight of a professional show."

This is a new Any Card at Any Number effect in which (apparently) the spectator does all of the work, and it happens all in his hands. Not only that, but the performer has predicted the entire outcome; the card and the number, far in advance! This is all true. The performer never touches the deck once the effect begins.

Here is the effect as the audience sees it: The deck is shuffled by a spectator. The performer has any spectator think of any number between one and fifty-two, but not to reveal it to anyone until asked by the performer. Nothing is written down. The number is simply thought...

Every so often a piece of mentalism comes along that is more like a piece of Comedy Theater rather than "just a trick". David Devlin's Case File is a piece of Comedic Mental Theater. A spectator is brought up on stage, and is given a large folder labeled, "Case File". She is told not to open it, and to keep it safe. The performer now brings up another...

The performer shows three cards: two jokers, and the queen of hearts. The queen of hearts is the money card. All the spectators have to do is follow the queen. No matter how hard they try, it just isn't possible. The queen is anywhere but where they think she is. Finally, in an effort to make it easier to follow, one of the jokers is set aside. The queen is mixed with the one remaining joker. Instantly, the queen has vanished leaving only two jokers in your hands. The "joker" that was set aside, and has been in full view the entire time is turned over and is found to be the missing queen. The...

In effect, a card is selected and signed. The card is then cleanly torn into four separate pieces. The pieces are then placed between the fingers ala The Multiplying Billiard Balls, and the hands are otherwise empty (they really are!). The pieces are then gathered up one at a time. Each side of each piece is clearly shown. The bundled pieces then instantly pop open in a "flash". The card is fully restored and given to the spectator to keep as a souvenir.

Phase 1: The deck is shown to consist of five different symbols repeated five times. The cards are then mixed and the squared deck is placed face-down in front of a spectator. The mentalist turns his back to the spectator, and tells her to cut the deck wherever she wishes, and to complete the cut. A cased deck is placed on the table. You remove your wallet, and also place it on the table. Both are on the table, and they are there in FULL view before ANYTHING happens. You tell the spectators that you removed one card from the deck, and put it in your wallet. A spectator then makes a series of choices bringing her to one card. The spectator herself removes the deck from the case, and deals the cards one at a time to the table. There are only 51 cards. The thought of card is missing. You then open your wallet, and remove a card. It is the thought of card!
