David L. Ganz

DAVID L. GANZ, a senior partner in the New York City law firm of Ganz and Hollinger, P.C., has been writing about rare coins since his “Under the Glass” column debuted in 1965. The column is the longest running feature in “Numismatic News”, a weekly where Ganz was once Washington correspondent and later assistant editor. He served as a member of the Board of Governors of the American Numismatic Association (1985-1995), including two years as President (1993-1995). He was also outside general counsel to auctioneer Phillips, Son and Neale, and for a dozen years served in like capacity for the Professional Numismatists Guild He is the author of The Smithsonian Guide to Coin Collecting (Harper-Collins, 2007), The World of Coins and Coin Collecting (Scribners, 1980, 3d rev. ed. 1998), the Essential Guide to Investing in Precious Metals (Krause, 2011), Profitable Coin Collecting (Krause, 2008), Rare Coin Investing: An Affordable Way to Build Your Portfolio (Krause, 2010), Planning Your Rare Coin Retirement (Bonus, 1997) and more than 20 other books on topics ranging from “A to Z,” African Literature and Zoning Law.

Ganz was appointed by President Richard Nixon to the 1974 Annual Assay Commission and holds a Clinton Administration appointment to the Citizens Commemorative Coin Advisory Committee (1993-1996) where Mint director Philip Diehl gives him substantial credit for creation of the “state quarter” coin program that returned over $5-billion to the American people.

In addition, he served as Mayor of Fair Lawn, N.J., and since 2003 has been an elected member of the Board of Chosen Freeholders of Bergen County, New Jersey. With three adult children, and and his wife, the former Kathleen Gotsch, live in Fair Lawn with their four felines.
