David, Outlaw by Liza Marion

“Rak chazaq v'ematz!” Just be strong and courageous! God spoke these words to Joshua as he stood before the walls of Jericho. Over three hundred years later, these very words continued to ring out across fields of battle as the Israelites and their enemies clashed in war. This battle cry echoed through the life of a young shepherd, called to defend his country, and anointed by his God to become the next king. In the face of doubt, fear, and rejection, David courageously followed God's plan for his life, overcoming betrayal and loss to become one of the greatest kings in Israelite history.

This was a really good book--not great, but really good, entertaining and suspenseful. The book actually follows the story of David as found in 1 Samuel--from Goliath to Saul's death. The author took some literary liberties to tell the story, but it is essentially, the story from 1 Samuel. The author really brought the character of David alive. It is filled with suspense, betrayal, insanity, trickery and heartache. She did a good job breathing new life into a rather worn out story (although it is one that I love). I also liked the fact that she used the Psalms to round out the character of David--using them in dialogue and for emotional content. Super effective. (No, I am not that great with the Psalms, but she provided end notes so I could go read those Psalms on my own). This book is well worth the read.
