Day Hikes In the Beartooth Mountains: Billings to Red Lodge to Yellowstone by Robert Stone

The beautiful Beartooth Mountains rise dramatically from the tawny plains of south-central Montana and stretch to the northern reaches of Yellowstone National Park. Montana's highest peaks are found in this rugged, snow-capped range in the Rocky Mountains. The Beartooths are home to glaciers, deep canyons, streams, waterfalls, over a thousand lakes, abundant wildlife, protected wilderness areas, national forests, and North America's largest alpine tundra region. Now in its 5th edition, Day Hikes In the Beartooth Mountains includes an extensive collection of hikes within this mountain range and the adjacent foothills and plains. The 123 hikes range from 10,000-foot plateaus and peaks to treks along the Yellowstone River as it begins its journey through the plains. The hikes lie within a 120-mile radius of Red Lodge, an active resort and ski town. The Beartooth Highway, heralded as "the most scenic highway in America" by Charles Kuralt, heads out of town and across the Beartooth Plateau to Yellowstone Park. Stunning hikes are found around Red Lodge, atop the plateau, into the northeast end of Yellowstone, through the Paradise and Boulder Valleys, and out into the plains to Billings. A vast network of hiking trails travel up forested canyons, criss-crossing over alpine plateaus into adjoining drainages. A range of scenery and hike lengths are included, from relaxing creekside strolls to all-day, top-of-the-world outings. All hikes can be completed during the day. Map sources and references are listed for extending the hikes.
