Sustainable Growth in the African Economy: How Durable is Africa's Recent Performance?

Jeffrey James

Sustainable Growth in the African Economy: How Durable is Africa's Recent Performance? by Jeffrey James

The current growth path in sub-Saharan Africa is not following the Lewis model where labour moves from low-productivity agriculture to higher productivity manufacturing. Instead, it is moving directly to inappropriate (import and labour-saving) methods. This book seeks to show how this distorted growth process leaves out the major resource of these countries - labour - and ends up creating unstable employment and underemployment, leading to inequality and poverty. In this way it demonstrates how the entire growth process may be rendered unstable and unsustainable.

Innovation Driven Institutional Research: Towards Integral Development

Ronnie Lessem

Innovation Driven Institutional Research: Towards Integral Development by Ronnie Lessem

This is the third volume in the CARE-ing for Integral Development series. It continues to build on the previous two works, Community Activation and Awakening Integral Consciousness, as well as preceding the fourth and final book, Embodying Integral Development. This book serves as a follow-up to the author's approach to integral research and development, economics and enterprise, contained within the Innovation and Transformation series, and as a focus for how put all of this "CARE-fully" to work.

Urban Land Acquisition and Involuntary Resettlement: Linking Innovation and Local Benefits

Vincent Roquet & Luciano Bornholdt

Urban Land Acquisition and Involuntary Resettlement: Linking Innovation and Local Benefits by Vincent Roquet & Luciano BornholdtExpansion and development of urban areas require acquisition of land, which, in turn, often requires physical relocation of people who own or occupy this land. Land acquisition and resettlement may also be required to improve the lives of the more than 1 billion people who currently live in slums around the world, most of them in developing countries. Therefore, any effort to embark on significant, sustainable urban development needs to ensure that there are adequate processes for land acquisition and, so that resettlement does not become a constraint to much needed urban development. Planners,...

The Political Economy of Special Economic Zones: Concentrating Economic Development

Lotta Moberg

The Political Economy of Special Economic Zones: Concentrating Economic Development by Lotta Moberg

Special Economic Zones (SEZs) have become a popular development policy throughout the world over the last half a century. These zones form designated areas where governments offer businesses lower taxes, tariffs, and often lighter regulations. Generally, SEZs aim to attract investments and raise a country's export and employment rates, but although success stories are often cited, there are numerous failed projects that have instead become burdens for their host countries.

This book examines SEZs from a political economy perspective, both to dissect the incentives of governments, zone developers,...

World Development Report 2017: Governance and the Law

World Bank Group

World Development Report 2017: Governance and the Law by World Bank GroupWhy are carefully designed, sensible policies too often not adopted or implemented? When they are, why do they often fail to generate development outcomes such as security, growth, and equity? And why do some bad policies endure? World Development Report 2017: Governance and the Law addresses these fundamental questions, which are at the heart of development. Policy making and policy implementation do not occur in a vacuum. Rather, they take place in complex political and social settings, in which individuals and groups with unequal power interact within changing rules as they pursue conflicting...

Argentina's Economic Reforms of the 1990s in Contemporary and Historical Perspective

Domingo Cavallo & Sonia Cavallo Runde

Argentina's Economic Reforms of the 1990s in Contemporary and Historical Perspective by Domingo Cavallo & Sonia Cavallo Runde

Why has Argentina suffered so much political and economic instability? How could Argentina, once one of the wealthiest countries in the world, failed to meet its potential over decades? What lessons can we take from Argentina's successes and failures??

Argentina's economy is?irresistibly?fascinating. Argentina's economic history-its crises and its triumphs cannot be explained in purely economic terms. Argentina's economic history can only be explained in the context of conflicts of interest, of politics, war and peace, boom and bust. Argentina's economic history is also intertwined with?ideological?struggles...

Fiscal Policy and the Natural Resources Curse: How to Escape from the Poverty Trap

Paul Mosley

Fiscal Policy and the Natural Resources Curse: How to Escape from the Poverty Trap by Paul Mosley

It is widely accepted that natural resource wealth, especially in the form of oil and minerals, can be a key factor in inhibiting economic development. Many of the countries that are richest in natural resources - including oil, metals and diamonds - are amongst the world's poorest. Why?

Fiscal Policy and the Natural Resources Curse re-examines this ancient, unsolved puzzle, asking why many governments of natural resource-intensive countries are incapable, in a globalised world, of dealing with the natural-resource curse. This book offers a detailed analysis of the power-relationships which underpin...
