Gail Lorimer

My book was published in December 2010 one month after I had turned 70 years of age, being my first book.

I was the second born child in a family of three, having a brother two and a half years older and a sister thirteen months younger. Due to my parents separating when I was six my mother told me I had to leave school at the age of fifteen because she could no longer afford to keep me there.

After working in an office as a Burroughs ledger operator until the age of twenty I left, married, and had my first child nine months after the honeymoon night. My first husband and I had three natural children and adopted our last child who is part Maori. I am now separated and single.

During the eleven years at home rearing my children I painted and also started educating myself at night school gaining the exams and qualifications I didn't receive due to leaving school so young. As I had always wanted to be a nurse I applied for training when my youngest started school and finished a nursing degree four years later. During the following years, I gained an M.A. in nursing and at the age of fifty started my training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, where I gained full membership in 2002 at the New Zealand Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.

In 2002 I started living between the U.K. in England and New Zealand, spending approximately 6-7 months in either country. During my time in England I worked in the N.H.S. in London doing locums through an agency and worked in many hospitals with my nursing and psychotherapy training. During this period I became an Associate member of the Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy for the N.H.S. I was mainly employed in Community Mental Health in London.

In N.Z. I was the first Clinical Specialist Psychotherapist to be employed by the Auckland District Health Board.

I now have twelve Grand children and nearly five great grandchildren, two of who will be born in a couple of months.

I enjoy art and do painting, screen printing, and photography, practicing mindfulness as a method to relax and rest my mind and brain. Also I plan to set up a small private practice in New Zealand when I 'settle down' and stop living like a gypsy!!?
