The word roulette is named after the French word meaning 'small wheel'. And a wheel with 37 (in European roulette) or 38 (in American roulette) colored and numbered compartments is at the center of the game. A croupier spins the wheel in one direction then throws in a ball in the opposite direction. Once the ball settles into one of the compartments the winning number is determined.
