Visual gags are worth their weight in gold, and for over twenty years, Graham Hey has been writing them for some of the world's top performers. Here's a collection of 30 of them - all easy to perform, for a variety of audiences from corporate to close-up, to kids. For many of them you won't have to buy anything at all, for others you will, but we're not talking more than a few bucks. From a paper bag, you remove a ball of paper which is then thrown over your shoulder into the audience. The person who catches it is going to assist you. You show them a selection of movies written on to the faces of playing cards. These are turned face down and the spectator mixes them behind their back. You say you're going to try and use your manipulation skills and make them select a certain movie. After they have mixed the cards, you invite them to take the top card. It's 'Jurassic Park'. You then instruct them to open the ball of paper used to freely select them - it's a poster for Jurassic...

Two cards (2 x Queen of Spades) are shown to a spectator, who is then handed an "invisible card" the 9 of Hearts. The spectator throws the invisible card towards the magician who is going to catch it between the two queens. The spectator does this and the 9 of hearts instantly appears between them! Then, whenever the magician wants, the 9 of hearts vanishes - only to turn up in another location. This is a great self-working effect that gets great reactions.

A mentalism effect with drama, humor ... and death! What's not to like?

Four people are asked to write the name of a living celebrity on a piece of paper, while another person writes the name of a dead celebrity on theirs. The papers are folded and put inside five unmarked tablet bottles which are then placed into a bag and mixed up. The performer brings out the bottles one by one, holding each against his forehead dramatically. He can instantly locate the dead celeb.

Here's a fun trick that has everyone laughing and a cool twist at the end provides the magic. It's self-working and perfect for either close-up or stage.

The effect: A prediction in a bag is placed on the table - the top of a pineapple is sticking out of the top. A selection of cards is shown - each has the name of a fruit on its face. A spectator freely selects any card - they select: 'Orange'. Oh no, that's not going to work! But then a great twist means the magician manages to save face. Forget those effects that cost you $40 bucks and you never use - get Pineapple Crush and add some...

Here's a cool mentalism effect where you force a series of Scrabble pieces in the fairest of ways. The effect can be performed in close-up or standup situations. A bag of Scrabble pieces is shown in a paper bag - spectators can freely select any pieces - they are all mixed - just like in a normal game of Scrabble. The performer reveals that he knew how many points their Scrabble tiles would add up to, plus which word would be made, in a novel way. This is easy to do and easy to make. All you need is a couple of paper bags ... and the gimmick is so easy, you can make a pile of them at the same...

This self-working effect is Graham's feature in the close-up spot of his cruise ship cabaret act. Plays big. Is easy to do. Comes with gags and Graham's full presentation. And it includes the bonus effect: Movie Star Madness.

The Elvis card is lost somewhere in the deck. A deck of blue cards is shown then cut into two piles. The spectator selects a pile, and then deals the cards face up onto the table - they are told to stop when they are happy. All the other cards are turned over and they are blue-backed. But - there was one red-backed card in the deck ... the spectator dealt the cards...

The performer hands a prediction envelope to a member of the audience and then asks people to call out the names of any members of the Beatles, the Bee Gees or ABBA. (*You choose any bands). The performer writes down a selection of the names as they are called out until he's got seven or eight of them. He then reads them all out again to make sure he's got every person's selection, which they confirm. The papers are then folded and thrown into a bowl. A spectator selects any one and takes a secret look at it.

A prediction envelope is placed on the table, along with the performer's favorite novel. The spectator is handed a magazine that has had the staples removed and is asked to select any one of the double pages she likes. It's a free choice. She is then asked to add all the page numbers together. Let's say the number totals 170. A spectator signs a freely selected card (no force). The card is replaced into the deck which is shuffled and thrown loose into a McDonald's paper bag (or any other bag, or container, which can be borrowed and is completely ungimmicked). The bag is shaken by various spectators - the cards are genuinely mixed-up. The magician then reaches into the bag whilst looking away - and brings out a single card. It is the signed card! This is so easy, self-working, and perfect for close-up or on stage.

Six Sharpies are placed under 6 numbered, identical paper cups. While the performer turns away, a spectator removes a Sharpie from any cup and writes down the number of the cup they selected. They place the paper in their pocket and replace the Sharpie back under the cup. The magician can instantly reveal which number cup they took the Sharpie from. 100% self-working. Nothing is marked. A simple gimmick you may already have does the trick.

Here's a selection of cool self-working magic and mentalism tricks perfect for close-up and stand-up.

For example: The spectator freely selects a luggage label that has a holiday destination written on it. When a world map is opened, their chosen destination is circled.

Or how about this: A selection of postcards is shown - they're moved from the back of the pile to the front. When the spectator calls 'STOP!' the very next postcard is the only one with a hand-written message on it.

Or: Three luggage labels with vacation destinations written on them are...

A great mentalism effect for small groups to huge crowds.

Effect: A pile of cards with the name of a movie star on each one is shown to a helper. They remove one and it's placed into an envelope, whilst the magician turns away - the remaining cards are removed. It's a completely free choice.

There are no stacks, and no card set up - they can be freely shuffled by the spectator first. The cards are not marked. The envelope is 100% opaque. The spectator holds the envelope with their card inside, in front of their face - and the performer asks a member of the audience which movie the spectator...

A spectator writes any word of their choice onto a sticker which is placed on their playing card. The card is then replaced somewhere into the deck - the magician genuinely doesn't know exactly where the card is. The deck is placed back into the card box and the magician proceeds to correctly discern what word has been chosen. A different word every time. Can also be a drawing, number, etc. Five-second re-set. No-brainer.

What people really love is that there's a fantastic visual gag (or two) in the middle of this routine which we don't want to spoil. But you will get big laughs, guaranteed....

Five different colored cards are shown to the spectator and each one has an object written on it which you can find in your house. The performer turns away and spreads the cards. The spectator is asked to select a card and show it around. There is no forcing. The card is replaced anywhere in the spread the whilst the performer is still turned away and then they are shuffled by the spectator ... then the performer places the cards into an envelope. The helper is asked to think of the object on the card they selected. The performer opens his hand to reveal a miniature object - it's the object...

A comedy 'just chance' routine with a modern twist.

Word-Up is a word prediction where a spectator selects any magazine from a selection, any two numbers are called out and the word on that page and line is remembered. The performer reads their mind and writes down the exact same word. Then he asks the spectator to flip through their magazine and remember any famous landmark they see ... the performer draws his in advance. He's correct again. It's so easy to do. You'll have to buy a few magazines to make this, but it's worth it. Perfect for stand-up.
