In the year 2763 a single religious power rules the entire world with a loving fist. The Wheatles control the earth according to the guidance of their Holy Text, the Torble'ran, in which they are commanded to exterminate any person who subverts the word of Tevech and His Prophet. The whole world closes their minds, and the result is catastrophic. Jeremiah Crucer is a devout Wheatle who, four years earlier, turned his wife over to the Wheatle government when she confessed to practicing witchcraft. So severe was her crime that she was sentenced to immediate incineration, along with Crucer's unborn child. Now he questions whether the Almighty could ever forgive him. Although scripture is on his side, Jeremiah has difficulty finding peace with his inner demons until he happens upon the book "How to Spot a Pagan," written by that era's leading theologian. Through the words of this religious scholar, Jeremiah is able to find peace and his true calling. But along his blood-paved road to becoming a witch-hunting Agent of Wheatlism, Jeremiah Crucer learns darker, unsettling secrets of his own faith and begins to see the Pagans in a whole new light.
