Peter Duffie

(April 15, 1957 - )

Peter first became fascinated by magic at the age of eight after his uncle showed him some magic tricks using cards, coins, matches and chalk. But it was the cards that held his deepest interest, and so began a learning process that continues to the present day.

Peter’s chief mentor was, and still is, Roy Walton. Others whom he met and had a profound influence on his path include, Gordon Bruce, Andy Galloway, Tommy Frederick, Fred Robinson, Dave Campbell, Eric Mason, Ken Brooke, Peter Kane, Alex Elmsley, Pat Page, Phil Goldstein, Gene Maze, Richard Kaufman and Dai Vernon.

A past winner of the Scottish Conjuror’s Association Close-up competition and the British Ring Zina Bennett Cup, Peter considers competitions "good fun but meaningless."

His early association with Jerry Sadowitz led to a series of books, beginning with 17916 Alternative Card Magic (1982). It started with two young men - a manuscript - and no publisher. Peter is grateful that Martin Breese saw in the material what others didn't, and took the chance. All five Duffie/Sadowitz books have recently been reprinted by Martin Breese in a single collection titled Cardzones - a handsome cloth-bound tome. While the material dates back to the 1980's, Peter is proud of this collection.

The 1990's saw a new direction with the release of Imagine, a self-produced manuscript of near-self-working card tricks. This was followed by Obsession, Ulterior Motifs, and so it went on, and indeed, Peter continues to release new booklets to this day.

In the mid-90's, a chance encounter with Richard Kaufman at a Blackpool convention led to a publishing contract being signed. Duffie's Card Compulsions was published in 1995 by Kaufman and Greenberg. This was followed by Five Time Five (Scotland) and Effortless Card Magic.

Peter is currently in partnership with the clever Californian magician Robin Robertson. Together they have created over 200 new effects and recently released Card Conspiracy Vols. 1 and 2. A third book is planned.

21 Card Tricks by Peter Duffie

This book has nothing to do with the "21 Card Trick". However it features twenty-one of the best card tricks Peter Duffie has to offer. Three other individuals significantly contributed to this book. They are Roy Walton, Gene Maze and Marty Kane. It can get hardly any better when it comes to cards.

1st edition, 2000

BETWEEN THE ACES: Very slowly you deal cards onto the table and a spectator stops you anywhere. He notes the card stopped at - it is placed on top of the deck and the dealt cards dropped on top with absolutely no moves. Despite the fairness of the procedure, the selected card is now...

4 Most by Peter Duffie

Four lovely card effects put together by Peter Duffie.

4-SOME: Here's a simple and automatic, yet highly effective, way to get four of a kind using the Fulves "Gemini Twins" concept.

3-SOME: A matching effect where the spectator does all the work and finishes with Three of a Kind. Inspired by, but not using, Marty Kane's Status Quo-2 Principle.

THE HEAVY TEAM: A selected card lost in a packet is found by a randomly chosen Ace detective.

GHOST BUSTER: In effect, you show an Ace, Two, Three and Four of Spades. Each card passes from top to bottom and it is then discarded. When you reach...

Automatic Gambler
Created in October 2000 (along with Klectors that is elsewhere in this book) as an impromptu performance piece for the International Magic convention in December of that year. You demonstrate how to stack 4 Aces for a four-handed game. Then, you drop the Aces face up on top of the deck and they instantly vanish. You immediately give the deck to a spectator who now deals, not 4 but 5 hands this time. The face up Aces fall to his hand!

Alternative Card Magic by Peter Duffie & Jerry Sadowitz

This work has become a classic among card magicians. Alternative Card Magic was the first book for Peter Duffie and Jerry Sadowitz, two creative card men. Jeff Busby called it "the card magic book of the decade".

In the foreword Roy Walton writes:

I have known Peter and Jerry since they first became interested in conjuring and have been amazed at their rapid progress in the art of conjuring with cards. Their work shows considerable originality, combined with ingenious methods and an acute awareness of what makes a good audience trick. Studying their tricks will give you pleasure - performing them will give...

Peter Duffie
Area 52 by Peter Duffie

Fourteen wonderful card routines by one of Scottland's card experts, Peter Duffie. One routine, 'Blendid', particularly caught my eye. The effect is as follows. You give two spectators each a packet of four cards and you have a similar packet. Each packet contains two black cards and two red cards. The idea is simple - you place one card face down on the table, and both spectators place one of their cards on top. The idea is get three cards all of the same color. The only problem is that neither of you are allowed to look at the faces of your cards. However, a 100-percent color match is guaranteed....
