James E. Crimmins

James E. Crimmins was born and educated in Wales, and holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from Swansea University and a Ph.D from The University of Western Ontario. He has held a Canada Council Postdoctoral Fellowship, visiting fellowships at the East-West Seminar in Naples, Italy, and the Humanities Institute at the University of Manitoba, and an American Eighteenth-Century Studies Fellowship at McMaster University. In 2013-14, he was Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Philosophy at Vanderbilt University, and Visiting Fellow in the Institute of Bill of Rights Law at the College of William & Mary in the USA. His research has been supported by prestigious awards from Fulbright Canada and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, most recently a research grant for 2013-16 to support his work on American political thought. Professor Crimmins has published widely on eighteenth and nineteenth century political thought in countries around the world, including Britain, Canada, France, Ireland, Japan, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, and the USA. His books include The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of Utilitarianism (2013), Utilitarian Philosophy and Politics (2011, paperback 2013), Church-of-Englandism and its Catechism Examined in The Collected Works of Jeremy Bentham (2011), On Bentham (2004), Jeremy Bentham’s Auto-Icon, and Related Writings (2002), Utilitarians and Religion (1998), Secular Utilitarianism (1990), and Religion, Secularization and Political Thought (1989; reissued 2013).
