Born in the shadow of San Francisco's Kaiser shipyards during the "last good war," John R Matthews grew up in Santa Cruz, California a bit further down the coast. He became interested in physics in the 7th grade after seeing a tin can crushed by sea level atmospheric pressure (14.7 pounds per square inch).
Matthews served in the U.S. Army Engineer Corps and attended Cabrillo College afterwards. He is employed by Boise State University in Boise, Idaho.
