August 15th, 2011, started out as an ordinary summer day for my family. Our active, athletic son, Sam, newly fifteen, went to soccer practice, but he never came home again. Ordinary? That day on the soccer field, anything ordinary disappeared. An unknown, undetected heart condition caused Sam to go into cardiac arrest. His fifteen-year-old heart stopped pumping, and he was gone. My husband and I have been followers of Christ for many years, but suddenly we found ourselves questioning everything we had believed to be true about God. Shortly after Sam died, I began to write. The words in Just Fifteen essentially are reflections written while we were in the very midst of the beginning of great loss. Just Fifteen is not a self-help book about grief, nor does it contain instructions on how to grieve or cope. These honest, candid written reflections portray early grief as it happened, truths we have gleaned from God's Word, and how we are coming to know God better.
