This popular Spanish song is one of the most recorded in the history of music. To name a few it has been recorded by among others Mireille Mathieu, Elvis Presley, Julio Iglesias, James Last, Acker Bilk, Artie Shaw, Andre Rieu and Gil Evans. Composed after a visit to Cuba in 1861 by Spanish composer Sebastian Yradier (Sebastian Iradier Salaverri), the influence of Cuban habanera gives the song its distinctive rhythm. Particularly in Mexico the song quickly became popular and in many places, including Afghanistan, Hawaii, the Philippines, Germany, Romania, Zanzibar, and Goa it gained status of a folk song. In popular culture it has been featured in countless films including the 1961 film Blue Hawaii where Elvis Presley sings a version by the alternative title No More.
