The story has several similarities with the all time great book "The Odyssey" written by Homer. The narrative keeps on shifting between the story of Inman and the story of Ada Monroe, taking the reader back and forth. Ada Monroe is the daughter of a minister who has recently left Charleston and moved to a farm in the rural mountain community called Cold Mountain. W. P. Inman also comes from that community. Inman and Ada come to know each other but only after a brief time of their acquaintanceship Inman goes to the war. He hopes to see Ada again and that is why he eventually deserts the army and takes a very dangerous journey back home.
