The novel is based on a true story. Oskar Schindler is the central character in the novel. It tells his story. He was a member of the Nazi Party in Germany, but having saved the lives of 1,200 Jews from concentration camps, he became a hero in Germany and Poland. The story has been fictionalized but the characters and places retain their real name in this work of historical fiction. The author had already written many successful novels before and after the present novel. However, this novel became the author's most well-known and celebrated work of fiction.
