Having left Sudan, Valentino came to the United States. While living in the United States, he realized that it was necessary to tell the world his life story. In those days, Deng was attending beginners writing classes at Georgia Perimeter College, but to write his own story he needed a more adept writer because he believed that only a good writer could do justice to his story. Through a friend, Deng met Dave Eggers. In the following one year of their friendship, Deng described his hardships and how he had been tortured in Sudan. Dave Eggers listened to everything very attentively and then started to write it.
