Toby tries to understand the world around him, but even at thirty, he thinks and acts like a seven-year-old. He wants to be friends with everybody, but most people don't want to be his friend. His whole life revolves around his identical twin brother, Tom, who didn't suffer the debilitating brain injury at birth like Toby. He struggles to understand why Tom acts so different from him, yet looks just like him. When tragedy strikes, Toby goes to live with Tom and his new bride, Joann, who didn't expect to become mother to a thirty-year-old, which overwhelms her and threatens to destroy their marriage. Loving Toby becomes a struggle for her. Their lives are turned upside down when they discover that Toby might be guilty of murder but can't remember what happened. Tom can't bear to see his childlike twin brother arrested, so he switches places with him before the police arrive. Joann flees with Toby to protect him and is forced to confide in an aged attorney and young private investigator, hoping they can find out what really happened, before somebody discovers the switch. Their search takes them into the desperate world of the street people.
