This is the first part of Vernon's famous Inner Secrets of Card Magic series. It includes notable work on color changes. In "Dai Vernon's Colour Changing Pack" Vernon provides the proper motivation for the use of the Hindu Shuffle: showing the back color of the deck. This was the publication that taught me the Three Card Monte many years ago. It has all you ever need on this wonderful performance piece - and then some.

Erdnase writes in Expert at the Card Table:

"There is not a single card feat in the whole calendar that will give as good returns for the amount of practice required, or that will mystify as greatly, or cause as much amusement, or bear as much repetition as this little game!

Vernon performed it reciting:

"A little game from Hanky Poo, the black for me, the red for you - all you have to do is to keep your eyes on the little lady - ten gets you twenty - twenty...

A spectator selects a card from a blue backed deck and signs it on both sides. The same card is pulled from a red backed deck by the spectator. Now there are the same two cards, one signed on both sides (blue back) and one not signed (red back). The performer explains that such twin cards are always connected in a mystical way. He takes the cards and the magic happens...the face signature travels from the blue backed card to the red backed card by rubbing them slightly face to face... The magician smiles and mentions: “Twins often share something! And here the twin cards share the signatures,...

A sweet revelation of a selected card. The Magician offers a beverage to the spectator. The spectator selects a card and the magician explains to him that he found out that cold beverages are much better if you add some sugar to them. The reaction of the sugar causes the sugar to form the shape of the selected card at the inside bottom of the glass.

An alternative presentational angle could be that you have caused some of that massive amount of sugar already in the soft drink to fall out at the bottom and form an image of the selected card.

No matter how you want to spin the story, this...

A wonderful self-working rendition of the classic "Out Of This World" effect. This was the first real card trick I saw - and I was baffled.

A borrowed deck is shuffled. A red and a black card are placed face up on the table. The performer then removes cards, one at a time from the deck. Without the spectator seeing the faces of these cards, he indicates whether he thinks a card is a red or a black. If he thinks it is a red card, the performer places it, face down, on the face up red card. If the spectator thinks it is a black card, the performer places it face down on the face up black card....

You show four face up cards, explaining that two are identical, and ask someone to call out the name of the card they see twice. They do this three times, but are only correct on their third attempt! You repeat the entire procedure with the backs of the cards (only two are the same colour) ... with the same result!

Someone tries to find the queen amongst two jokers, but fails every time. You pocket the queen, and ask them to find the black and white joker... they fail again as... all three cards are queens!

Holding three face down jumbo(ish) sized playing cards you say, "These cards may look very large, but they aren't... it's just that I have very small hands." As you patter, you show the cards to be two jokers and... a queen.
