Odie Hawkins

Odie Hawkins is an alumnus of the famed Watts Writers Workshop, established by screenwriter/novelist Budd Schulberg in the wake of the Los Angeles/Watts Revolt in 1965. Hawkins is called "the Undergroundmaster" by a loyal constituency who have followed his writing career through an amazing collection of genres, from urban fiction to science fiction to his invention of the Pan-African Occult.

Odie Hawkins often pays tribute to Dr. Margaret Burroughs, the co-founder of the DuSable Museum of African-American History in Chicago. "If Dr. Burroughs hadn't taken an interest in my work, 'way back when, I would probably be serving a life sentence in somebody's jail. Or pushing up daisies in somebody's graveyard. That's where my negative life style was taking me".
