Orville Meyer on the Bullet Catch by Orville Wayne Meyer

Listen to Orville Meyer as he recalls his creation of his bullet catch method which was so masterfully performed by Ted Annemann. A rare treat for all mentalism and magic history buffs. This recording was made June 20th 1985.

Ben Robinson, an expert bullet catcher himself writes:

"Before Penn & Teller, David Blaine or Criss Angel decided to catch bullets, there was a book that talked about the history and secrets of the stunt. It was called Twelve Have Died — Bullet Catching, The Story & Secrets. I wrote that book when I was 23 years old. I wrote it in six weeks of uninterrupted writing. But before I did, before any of the aforementioned were born, Orville Meyer re-interpreted this ancient wonder (records go as far back as 1597) with a modern rifle and astounded audiences in Loup City, Nebraska in 1933. That was one year before Ted Annemann asked Meyer for his method, and asked him to keep quiet, “keep it just between ourselves” the great mentalist asked the other great mentalist. Both were barely out of their teens at the time. Meyer's method and his relationship with Annemann was what intrigued me in 1984. One year later I caught a bullet in my teeth at Houdini's grave and annoyed some amateur magicians in the process. You see, the stunt was one Houdini avoided (though boasted he’d do after Chung Ling Soo died trying) and the idea of doing it in an Orthodox Jewish cemetery had all the PR I needed, but others didn't like me one-upping their hero who was a better publicist than magician.

Now it is 2009 and Meyer speaks again via this recording made in 1985, giving all who pay for this recitation by magic's master, that truly outdid Houdini, a wondrous insight. THIS is what Annemann liked. The Society of American Magicians asked that I reprise my book Twelve Have Died for an entire issue (March, 1995) with new writing and unpublished photos (such as Annemann's funeral records) and they ultimately rewarded me with their Leslie Guest Award of Excellence. This tape, was originally done by Meyer for my book exclusively. Only 4 copies were known: my publisher, Ray Goulet, had one. My co-author (recently deceased) Larry White pestered Orville for 2 years to record this, and I had one. Of course, I'm sure Meyer kept a copy. In this recording, you will now hear what few have heard before. The voice of a master magician is everything. It is magic. It is the prime secret of the bullet catch. That's what all the bullet catcher wannabe's are missing. You can cheat the stunt, as many do on TV. You can slather headlines with your name and appear on talk shows talking about yourself, but you won't get to join the inner circle of magicians who really know this stunt the way Harry Anderson and I do until you study Orville Meyer, Annemann and then go before the rifle in front of a crowd...more than once...outdoors...in the wind and bright light... and even then... even then, the mystery remains as to WHY the magician does this. That is a question no book or tape can answer. BUT, you'll be ever so much closer if you hear what Meyer has to say. You might even come up with your own answer about why you think the bullet catch is worth doing. You might. I hope you buy this. You could spend a lot more on a lot less."
