The present novel is presumed to be an answer to Tobias Smollett's "Travels through France and Italy," which was quite unsentimental. While travelling in Europe, Sterne had come across Smollett. He found the other person quite unpleasant. The character of Smelfungus is based on Smollett. During the second half of the eighteenth century, travel writing became a dominant genre, thanks to the popularity gained by Sterne's novel. "A Sentimental Journey..." emphasized on the subjective discussions of personal liking and sentiments, unlike the earlier travel writings that wa highly objective, presented through non-personal point of view.
