Quixote Merrillees
My first novel was A Study of Monsters, a portrait of a crummy little town in Ohio where the wealthy people were poisoning the workers in the trailer park and laughing about it. I found out agricultural pump drawdowns had reversed the flow of groundwater so that toxins in the vadose zone were being sucked into the ritsy-titsy neighborhoods and leaking into ditches and basements of the people who somehow profit from a poisoned environment. I tried to warn people and no-one would listen. So I was laughing about the inability of the middle class to act intelligently in its own self-interest, and a working-class guy ratted me out. The police investigated me 48 times, finally hauled me to jail, took away my rights, and convicted me of a felony in a town where middle-class men are not arrested even when jars of hillbilly heroin are found in their cars. Now I'm on probation, I've lost all my rights under the constitution (yeah, that's a joke in Ohio, rights don't exist here unless you have money) and I have to check in with a probation officer for the next five years. Anything else you want to know, look up my blog.
