She wrote her first manuscript. When she found that her daughter was reading that manuscript with deep interest, she sensed that something had worked in her writing. She got inspired. Her novel "Homecoming" was rejected by several agents and many publishers. However, after its publication it proved to be a highly successful work. It won the Newbery Medal for its sequel, "Dicey's Song.' She was soon famous and successful. She began to enjoy her success. During an interview, she said that she saw both her family and her teaching as playing a great role in her life as a writer. In her Newbery Medal acceptance speech, Voigt said that she believed that young people are much tougher than most adults imagine.
