"Educating Rita" is highly influenced by Bernard Shaw's play "Pygmalion" in which an older professor tutors and shapes an uncouth flower girl into a lady. Russell had his own experiences with education. He once said that the writing of the play was highly influenced by his own experiences. During an interview, Russell stated that he had not set out to write an autobiographical play, but he admitted that the parallels between Rita and him seemed glaring now.
