Lucy is the central character and the protagonist of the novella. Her full name is Lucy Josephine Potter. She shares one of the author's given names and her birthday. In her youth, Jamaica Kincaid had also left the Caribbean to be an au pair in a large city in the United States. When she leaves her country, Lucy is nineteen years old. Lucy, the protagonist of the present work, is older than the other protagonists in the author's earlier works. For this particular reason, the book happens to have a more mature and cynical perspective.
