The novel is set in 1997 Los Angeles. It tells the story of Carmelite nun Sister John of the Cross. She happens to have been experiencing ecstatic visions of God for three years. At the same time, she experiences severe headaches. When she is examined, the doctors diagnose a small brain tumor in her temporal lobe. It is easily operable. Owing to that tumor, she suffers from a localized epilepsy, and it is probably the cause of the visions that she sees.
