Apuleius is assumed to have initially titled the novel "Metamorphoses," but it was renamed by the editors. There has always been a strong debate whether the novel was written in Rome or Carthage. However, most of the scholars and critics now agree that the book was written somewhere between 160s and 170s CE. It is mentioned in the history that Apuleius was accused of witchcraft by his wife's relatives. The present book does have an important autobiographical element. Apuleius was, however, acquitted. He happens to have stirred Apologia.
