It is generally assumed that the character of Dorimant is probably based on John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester. However, there is no solid proof to verify it. It is the third and his last play written by Etherege, but it is his most popular play. The play was able to gain so much popularity partly because several of the characters in the play were assumed to be based on real life individuals. It is also assumed that that the character of Sir Fopling Flutter was based on Beau Hewitt. The character of Medley was said to be based on the playwright himself.
