The story of the novel revolves around two rival groups, the Greasers and the Socs. According to the author, Socs is the short form for Socials. The groups are further divided by their socioeconomic status. Ponyboy Curtis is the first person narrator and protagonist of the novel. The story is set in 1965 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. However, it is never mentioned in the narrative. The novel was adapted into a Hollywood movie in 1963. It was also made into a short-lived television series, but it did not become very popular. The television serial was started in 1990.
