While writing the present novel, the author had visited Alaska and British Columbia to see the setting for his book personally. In his author's note at the end of the book, he writes that Spirit Bears do exist in that region. He says that had personally seen a three-hundred pounds male Spirit Bear during his travels thorough the Alaskan region. The author was the owner of a 700-pound black bear named Buffy. He understands the nature of the bear, and how the animal interacts with human beings. The author had brought the bear when it was very small.
