In the year 2007, a new edition of the book was published. The story is based on the real life relationship between the author and Morrie Schwartz, the author's college professor. Mitch mentions that Morrie was one of Mitch's favorite professors in college. On the day of his graduation, Mitch had gifted Morrie with a briefcase and made a promise to keep in touch. However, with the passage of time, things begin to change and Morrie and Mitch drifted apart and communication between the two ceased. It is a highly admirable piece of literature that tells a lot about student professor relationship and the relationship in general in academic environment.
