Robert J. Roecklein

I am a lecturer in rhetoric and political philosophy at Penn State Erie, the Behrend college. My undergraduate degree is from the University of Notre Dame cum laude in government (1983), and my doctorate in political philosophy was written under the direction of Wilson C. McWilliams at Rutgers University (1997). My research interests concern the atomistic heritage of the Enlightenment. It is my analysis that the atomistic physics relied upon by Descartes, Hobbes, Spinoza, Locke and Hume serves as the springboard for the neo-Epicurean ethics that they espouse. I bring to bear Plato's arguments about atomism from is dialogue the Parmenides as a principal analytical tool. I am currently working on a book about Locke and Hume and the Philosophical foundations of Liberal Democracy.
