There is no restriction of choice and the word is not written down. It is merely thought of by the spectator.

When the spectator is ready the mentalist begins to concentrate and slowly, letter by letter, reveals the mentally chosen word. It is that direct. A spectator things of a word and you reveal it. The spectator can choose a different word and you can repeat the effect right away.

Simple to learn, simple to perform, devastating in effect. What more could you ask?

[Note: This effect uses interlocking anagrams to determine the chosen word. The crib sheet is cleverly built into the theatrical review sheet. This effect is therefore literally self-working. No memorization required. Once you have familiarized yourself with the crib sheet and how it is embedded into the theatrical review sheet you are ready to perform it.]

1st edition 1986, 1st digital edition 2013, 13 pages.

Whacked: a book test for the working performer

Designed for the serious working performer, 'Whacked!' is a 10 minute mind-reading routine which revolves around Dave Gorman's best-selling comedy book Googlewhack Adventure. If you've no idea what that is, you can bring yourself up to speed by heading over to http://www.davegorman.com

This second edition manuscript gives full details of Mark's script and psychological approach – which is one of the things that lifts Whacked head and shoulders above so many other book-tests. The presentation has been honed over many, many performances for a wide variety of audiences, which ensures that the routine plays as well for a group of top professionals at a business luncheon as it does for a crowd of hip college students at a birthday party. The presentation is funny, sophisticated and guaranteed to deliver a great audience reaction every time it is performed.

The technical demands on the performer are minimal: no pre-show, no forces, no anagrams to remember and the book used, Dave Gorman's Googlewhack Adventure is absolutely normal and may be given away at the end of each performance (in fact we encourage you to do so!) The 'method' is entirely self-contained and will withstand the closest scrutiny. There literally is nothing for any spectator or participant to 'see'. Also, there are no extraneous props – everything used to perform Whacked is entirely natural to the proceedings, with no justifications required for any aspect of the handling. This leaves the mentalist free to concentrate on just one thing: entertaining his audience.

Finally, you'll be pleased to know that the principles and techniques used to accomplish Whacked are not dependent on the use of Dave Gorman's book and that ANY book may be used in ANY language. This booklet contains full instructions on how to alter the method for use with other books. Whilst not impromptu, the preparation is minimal and does not need to be repeated for subsequent performances. The method makes use of modern technology, but there is nothing to break, run out or let you down during a performance.

Whacked is not another book-test to add to your collection. It is a fully developed, real-world performance piece designed to be used by a professional performer at paid shows.

1st edition 2012, 20 pages.

Double Coincidence

Make It Yourself with this PDF.

Mentalist tells the audience that before the show, he gave a lady a dictionary, a red crayon and an envelope. He asked her to secretly circle a word and to seal the dictionary in the envelope. She was instructed to tell nobody the word, nor let anyone tamper with the envelope. He says this envelope is still in the audience.

When it's time to perform this effect, the Mentalist calls two people on stage.

The sealed envelope with dictionary is then retrieved by one of the spectators who holds on to it in full view. The Mentalist picks up a 300 page book and turning his head away, riffles the pages to have one spectator select a page from it. The book is opened at that place and given to spectator. It's obvious to the audience that the Mentalist hasn't had a chance to glimpse the pages of the open book. NO PAGE NUMBER IS CALLED OUT AT ANY TIME.

With his back still turned, the Mentalist asks the spectator to silently read the first few lines on the left page. Immediately, with no fishing, the performer describes what the person just read.

Now, for the big finale. The spectator is asked to call out any word on that line. The sealed envelope is opened and the other spectator (not the performer) removes the dictionary. There is a note stuck on the dictionary; that note tells which page number has the circled word on it.

The spectator opens the dictionary to that page (and yes, he can riffle the dictionary to check that this is the only circled page) and shows the audience the circled word. Before the word is read aloud, the Mentalist states wouldn't it be a marvelous coincidence if the only circled word on the dictionary was the word just called out by the first person. The word is read and seen to be the same word just called out! An unbelievable coincidence.

NO SECRET CUEING

NO FORCE OF THE WORD

ANY WORD CAN BE CALLED FROM THE LINE

NO STOOGES OR INSTANT STOOGES OF ANY KIND

SPECTATORS ON STAGE ARE COMPLETELY FOOLED

NO DUPLICATE PAGES IN THE NOVEL

This normally sells for $89.95 made up. You can buy the PDF and make this up yourself and save.

1st edition 2012, 20 pages.

Bookworm: The Ultimate Impromptu Book Test Act

Here is the act exactly as the audience sees it:

The performer asks for the loan of three paperback novels, a piece of paper, and a pen or pencil. The performer says, "I have a feeling about one of you, and I think I have a pretty good idea about something that is going to be significant to you a little later on." The performer then writes something on the paper, folds it up, and hands it to one of the audience members.

Three audience members are now selected to participate in the tests. Participant #1 selects a book, opens it up to a random page and remembers a word. The other participants, in turn, do likewise. However, the third participant does not even touch his book. He simply thinks of a word read from the book. No force.

Turning to the 3rd participant the performer begins to slowly extract the word he is merely thinking of (oh, I should mention that the performer truly does not know what the word the 3rd participant is thinking of.). However, before all of that information is gotten, the performer turns to the 2nd participant and instantly tells him the exact word he is thinking about. This is a real freak out moment and will cause screams. The performer then turns back to the 3rd participant and after a bit more information is gotten from his mind the performer tells him the word he is thinking of.

Now, for the final participant. The performer says, "Now, you are thinking of a word as well. However, remember before you even picked a book, I said that I had a funny feeling about you and that I wrote something down and said that it would be of interest to you later on. Guess what? It's later on. I don't know what word you are thinking of, but let's see if my gut feeling was right." The audience member, who has been holding the paper since the beginning, opens it up and shows what is written on it to the rest of the group. Written on the paper is the exact word the 1st participant is thinking of.

This is the book test act that David has held back for ten years. It is a very powerful act. And best of all, the entire act is totally, 120% impromptu. All of the objects are borrowed right down to the pen that you write your prediction with. This can be done anywhere and at anytime, even naked on a beach. There are no stooges, switches, secret devises, peeks, center tears, or preparation (well, there is a teensy weensy bit of preparation, but it takes less than 5 seconds, and is done right under their noses). The audience can examine everything before, during, and after the act as absolutely everything is borrowed. No gaffs of any kind are used. They can even frisk the performer if they wish. They will find nothing as there is nothing to find. This act truly is the ultimate act to use in any impromptu situation. In fact, this used to be a feature in David's full evening show. It is that powerful. Now, however, it is reserved strictly for impromptu situations. Oh, and the methods are easy to learn and you will be performing this in no time.

Don't expect any completely new methods here, but the way they are put together makes this a very strong and powerful routine.

1st edition 2012, 10 pages.

Word Sight

Based on the original Al Mann Lexicon Phenomena, but greatly improved and so far advanced it fools those who know the original effect.

Now you can make this up using your own computer for a fraction of buying it new already made up.

Imagine revealing two FREELY thought-of words from across the room using an ungimmicked dictionary (you will have to paste two pages with word lists at the very front and two pages at the very end of the dictionary). Imagine doing this 15 feet away and never touching the dictionary during the presentation. Devin Knight's Word Sight allows you to reveal two words, sight unseen, that are
freely chosen from word lists containing hundreds of words. There are no duplicate words in the lists. No special dictionary or certain edition is required. All you need are four word lists you make up and print off your computer. These are glued to the inside covers of ANY DICTIONARY.

Each of two spectators thinks of a word on the lists, looks up the meaning, and concentrates on the word. You pick up a notepad and without saying anything, you write two words, tear-off the paper and
place it writing down on the table. You never touch the paper again. The participants reveal the words they are thinking of, one of them picks up the paper, and there written in bold letters are the same two
words.

This can also be done using only one participant who thinks of two words and you reveal them both without asking any questions.

There are no forces, limitations, dual reality, or pre-show work of any kind. The spectators have free choices of hundreds of words! There are no verbal clues; you use only your eyes. The participants never write anything. The spectators tell you nothing!

Nothing is used but the dictionary with the word lists glued to the inside covers and a notepad for writing the two thought-of words. The thought-of words can be revealed even if the borrowed dictionary is a cheap one that does not have the words in it. Read that again; even if the words are NOT IN THE DICTIONARY for the person to look up, you can still correctly reveal the words! Sounds impossible but this is a fact.

No secret writing of any kind

No anagrams

No fishing of any kind

This effect can be adapted to work with any dictionary in ANY LANGUAGE. Complete with full directions, performance script, and information on how to adapt the effect to any language using any dictionary from any country. Once you make the lists, they will work with any dictionary you come across in the same language. No exceptions. All you need is a computer to print out the word lists.

[Important. this ebook is greatly expanded from the few pages in Devin's lecture notes.]

REVIEWS

"This is, by far, the best dictionary book test I have ever come across and one heck of a bargain!" - Jheff

"The price is ridiculously low. If you are looking for a dictionary test that is easy to do, defies explanation and that spectators will perceive as 'the real deal' you would be hard-pressed to beat Word
Sight." - Dick Christian

"To say the concepts behind this are brilliant is an understatement! When it comes to creating effects with deceptive methods which are both a delight to learn and to put at work... Devin is the man." - Paolo Cavalli

"Overall, this is a perfect addition to any mentalism act and can be very strong. Highest recommendation if you are looking for a dictionary test – gimmicked or ungimmicked. 5 out of 5 stars." - JC Sum, Magic Boutique (Singapore)

18 pages

Trinities

Trinities is a two-phase mind-reading routine. In the first phase, the mentalist correctly divines attributes (colour, suit, value) of playing cards which the spectator has shuffled, dealt and covered with his hands while the mentalist has turned away. In the second phase, which can be performed alone, the spectator forms a page number by combining the values of freely selected cards from the deck. Without the mentalist seeing, the spectator then opens up and freely examines an eBook (standard PDF) from a
collection of classic literary works stored on a computer, eBook reader or smartphone. Turning to the chosen page, a word is selected which the mentalist exactly identifies.

Phase 1 - Trinities Card Divination

Hands-off presentation - spectator shuffles the deck and deals the cards.

Normal deck is used - no gaffs, duplicates or marked cards. The deck can be fully examined.

Self-working - no sleights needed.

No peeks, fishing, equivoque, or confederates.

Phase 2 - Trinities Book Test

Ten eBooks are included in the PDF collection, comprising Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Mark Twain), A Tale of Two Cities (Charles Dickens), Dracula (Bram Stoker), Gulliver's Travels (Jonathan Swift), Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen), Robinson Crusoe (Daniel Defoe), Sense and Sensibility (Jane Austen), The House of the Seven Gables (Nathaniel Hawthorne), The Last of the Mohicans (James Fenimore Cooper) and Wuthering Heights (Emily Bronte).

Each eBook is at least 400 pages and has the 'full text' of the original literary works. If you wish, you can read the books right through! Each eBook will withstand the closest scrutiny.

Spectator has a completely free choice of book.

Mentalist does not know which book has been selected.

The spectator chooses the page number, and can change his mind.

No other props or gimmicks needed.

Effect can immediately be repeated for the same audience with a different page and word.

Nothing is ever written down.

No peeks, fishing, equivoque, sleights or confederates. Totally self-working.

Very simple memory work involved (an hour to master). Alternatively, the effect can be performed without the need for memory work.

Can be performed using a standard computer, eBook reader (capable of viewing PDFs), or smartphone. The only software needed is a PDF reader (e.g., Adobe Reader, Repligo) that has a 'Go To Page' option (not supplied).

Mentalist does not need to touch or see the computer, eBook reader or smartphone. It can all happen in the spectator's hands!

3rd edition 2011; 27 pages.

Liebrary

This is an ebook test. Yes, not a book test done with actual paper copies, but rather a book test done with ebooks, PDF ebooks that is. The advantage here is that you can perform it wherever you have your smartphone, tablet or iPad with you.

RhymeTime Sublime

Genesis: In the beginning there was Mick Ayres' award winning RhymeTime.

In 2002, Mick Ayre’s won a Linking Ring Award for Mentalism from the International Brotherhood of Magicians for his effect RhymeTime:

You openly display a list of common words. A guest is asked to mentally choose any word and then to create a word in her mind that rhymes with her selection. Without hesitation you name the word she just created in her mind! You may repeat RhymeTime immediately with another guest and reveal a completely different word.

At the end (of his wonderful manuscript), Mick wrote: “I feel RhymeTime offers a whole new method that has yet to be fully exploited. Please feel free to play with this concept and consider other applications for it within the world of mentalism.”

Now imagine being able to perform the same effect BUT with any borrowed reading material! Dr. Bill took Mick up on his offer and wove his method into an easy and extremely deceptive booktest.

And completely impromptu! Use any book, newspaper or magazine. Use the back of a cereal box.
Here is what Mick Ayre’s has to say about RhymeTime Sublime:

"Good news! Dr. Bill has exploited the RhymeTime principle to create an impromptu, gimmick-free book or magazine test. With my permission (and endorsement), Bill has created a presentation that raises the bar considerably."

From Jim Callahan:

“Your presentation is truly great and an incredible application of the RhymeTime principal. I wish my brain had come up with it.”

From Rich Hennessey:

"Dr.Bill’s evolution of Mick Ayres’ wonderful “RhymeTime” principle pens a plethora of possible presentations that any performer should appreciate....since it can incorporate nearly anything 'written'. I perform in restaurants...so for me, using a restaurant menu for the good doctor's “RhymeTime Sublime”...immediately came to mind...very nice Dr. Bill."

From Ron Martin:

“This method is completely new to me. I can see how it could cause a participant’s logical, rational train of thought to leave the tracks for a moment. Impromptu, gimmick-free routines like RhymeTime Sublime are very rare, indeed Dr. Bill’s addition reminds me of a mental pickpocket who is pocket putting... I am sure that this will fly completely under the radar. I can’t wait to see the reactions I get!”

1st edition 2009; 12 pages.

The Book of Book Tests

A unique and popular subject like the Book Test is analyzed here in 20 routines by such great contributors as: Ian Adair, Howard Adams, Len Belcher, Tan Hock Chuan, Rachel Colombini, Tom Craven, Maurice Fogel, Karrell Fox, Karl Fulves, Richard Himber, Arthur Setterington, Walter Sleight and Nick Trost.

In the standard effect (sometimes done as a prediction) a spectator opens a book to a page and concentrates on a word (or three words or a full line). The mentalist, standing some distance away, is able to reveal the word the spectator is thinking of. Of course, as per many classics, variations abound and Rachel has tried to keep this variety of methods. In this ebook you will also find a couple of very strong ‘magazine’ tests that give a touch of modern applications to the standard way of performing a book test.

1st edition 2010; 30 pages.

Dracula Ebook Test: for iPhones

"The easiest and most portable book test to date!" - Erik Jansson

The iPhone has loads of apps designed to do magic in the app store but there is one problem. None of them really are organic. As soon as you performed one of these effects with the phone everyone screams: "Its an app! Very clever but its an app". So here is one of the most organic apps on the market.

You show the spectator an ebook on your phone and run through how it works (scrolling etc,) for them... You let them see that every single page is different before you have a page randomly selected. You hold the phone face down so no one can see and invite them to scroll though the pages as much as they would like. When they stop you hold the phone screen up to them and ask them to remember the first line on the page. They do so and then they close the app down or scroll past the page themselfs.

You have never seen where they have stopped and they can stop where ever they choose. With this all in mind you can still devine down to the exact letter where they stopped. A true mind reading miracle in your pocket. Ready to go at all times.

This is the full book and can be freely inspected

Hit the right word or sentance 100% of the time

Super easy to do

No large books to carry. Imagine you are standing on a platform with a couple of friends waiting for the train. Everybody is checking his phone. The perfect opportunity to knock them dead - or after dinner in a restaurant, or after a meeting at work.

"This, like all of Alan's work, is magic that could make you pregnant. You take out three business cards and write down a country, the thought of word and draw the image that the spectator is thinking. There is nothing to memorize as the book does it all for you.

Note: the book can be handed out and is designed to fit inside your pocket making it the perfect routine for any working condition. This is another example of one of Paul Romhany’s own pet routines that he has audience tested through years of performing in the ‘real’ world.

If you have always wanted to do a book test that offers more than find a word then this is for you.

A.W.A.P. Book Test

This is a totally impromptu book test. It requires no gimmicks and can be done with virtually any book (hard cover or soft cover). There is also no setup. You do not need to have access to the book beforehand. And still you can reveal Any Word on Any Page.

Picture somebody choosing any book, from their own bookshelf. Then they open their book to any page they please and freely select any word. There are no forces and the choice of page and word is entirely free. That's what A.W.A.P. stands for. Any word any page.

You amaze them by revealing the word one letter at a time! This is a very clever and creative method. It will require practice. Just as you have to practice your card moves this will require you to practice. But I would not label this as difficult. Particularly because the PDF includes photos to make it crystal clear how to perform this miracle.

1st edition 2007; 23 pages.
