One of the methods used is an adaptation of a Royal Heath idea. Thus the name of this ebook. The methods are very general and can be adopted to many personalized and customized routines.

"I believe that The Heathen Devices are my greatest contribution to close-up mentalism." - Bob Cassidy

Here are just a few of the limitless applications made possible by the Heathen techniques and devices:

A spectator is handed several dice - anywhere from two to five - and rolls them to create a random number. In fact, he doesn't have to roll them if he doesn't want to, he can put them down anyway he likes. He can change any of the numbers and rearrange them at random. He can even do it when the performer's back is turned. (The dice, by the way, can be examined forever - they are perfectly fair.)

YET THE MENTALIST IS IN COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE FINAL RESULT

He can even write a prediction of the final total beforehand and give it to a spectator for safekeeping. No nailwriting or switching is used. The performer never touches the prediction after it is written.

The Heathen techniques are not limited to numbers. The mentalist can predict any city freely selected from an unprepared Atlas (or a remote-viewing target book), a freely selected zodiac sign, a word from a dictionary or any book a spectator provides.

And just about anything else he cares to force - anytime and any place.

The Heathen devices are a unique combination of logical disconnects, a few completely invisible and foolproof moves, and what has to be the absolutely coolest collection of secret devices you have ever seen. The selections seem so utterly fair and direct that forcing and/or peeking would seem to be out of the question.

With the Heathen Devices, the mentalist may force virtually anything he wants to - yet the selections appear to be absolutely fair.

1st edition 2006; 24 pages + video clip + graphics files

Puzzled

THE ONLY VERSION OF THE CLASSIC PUZZLE EFFECT THAT APPEARS TO BE A NEAR TEST CONDITIONS IMPOSSIBILITY.

The method used in Puzzled is completely original with Bob Cassidy. It is based on an "out-of-left-field logical disconnect" that will positively fool anyone who sees it.

The premise of the effect was created by the late English mentalist, Romark, back in the 1970's. A few years ago there was a minor hissy fit in the magic world about the creation and ownership of a jigsaw puzzle effect involving an image of the Mona Lisa. (But apart from the fact that the effect used a jigsawed version of Da Vinci's masterpiece rather than a map of the United States was about the only thing that distinguished it from Romark's effect - the rights to which, by the way - along with all of Romark's material, are owned by mentalist Bob Dorian.)

The effect is simple and direct - an easel, covered with a large cloth - stands on the stage. A spectator is handed a boxed jigsaw puzzle which, when assembled, will be a complete map of the United States. There is a separate piece for each of the states. She freely selects a puzzle piece - any State - from the box and holds it up for the audience to see. The mentalist removes the cover from the easel and a completed puzzle is seen, mounted on a large mat. It is, the performer explains, 'almost' an exact duplicate of the boxed US Map puzzle that was given to the spectator. He says 'almost' because the assembled puzzle on the easel has one piece (one State) missing.

Wouldn't it be an amazing coincidence if. . . .?

The piece the volunteer has been holding up for all to see is the very piece that is missing from the mounted puzzle!

While Bob's version of the effect was inspired by Romark's creation and is similar in effect, the resemblance is purely superficial. Any well versed mentalist or magician could, upon seeing Romark's or the later Mona Lisa version, easily work out a method. And the chances are they'd end up forcing a puzzle piece.

Unfortunately - there are more than a few intelligent laymen who would arrive at the same conclusion.

Puzzled, on the other hand, appears to be completely impossible. Here's why:

The spectator is handed THE OPENED PUZZLE BOX and is asked to look at the the pieces before freely selecting one.

THERE IS NO SWITCH OF PIECES

ONLY TWO PUZZLES ARE USED - ONE IN THE BOX AND ONE PERMANENTLY MOUNTED AND DISPLAYED ON THE EASEL. THESE ARE GENERIC PUZZLES THAT ARE AVAILABLE ANYWHERE.

That's right - the volunteer (whom the performer has never met before - there is absolutely no preshow work, secret cueing or confederacy involved) LOOKS AT THE PIECES AND SEES THEY ARE ALL DIFFERENT BEFORE SELECTING ANY ONE. The performer can be standing with his back turned if he so desires.

It is a one-man routine and can be performed anywhere and completely surrounded. No specially prepared puzzles are required. You can use any puzzle you like. The easel is unprepared and there is only one puzzle mounted on it beneath the cloth.

AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE EFFECT THE MENTALIST MAY GIVE THE BOXED PUZZLE TO THE VOLUNTEER AS A SOUVENIR OF A REMARKABLE "COINCIDENCE". (Which is what it must have been, because it is perfectly clear that the performer had absolutely no opportunity for trickery of any kind)

There are no furtive moves - everything is perfectly clean and direct and - best of all - Puzzled is practically self-working!

Everything you have just read is true. The method fools everyone. More significant to the working pro, however, is the fact that it is clean-cut and direct. And the routine is not only amazing - it is extremely entertaining as well.

Most important of all is the fact that it is exclusive. You won't see Puzzled being hawked all over the Internet and on display in every theme park or Vegas strip "Magic shop".

That is all we can say here. The rest you will find in Puzzled.

1st edition 2005; 18 pages.

Unified Remote Viewing: A Fly on the Wall

URV is a remote viewing presentation involving complete audience participation. In a series of tests replicating actual remote viewing experiments the audience is able, under what appear to be strictly controlled conditions, to perform amazing accurate remote viewings of hidden target photographs.

Such effects are rare in mentalism and have an extremely powerful impact. They not only provide a unique experience for any intelligent audience but serve to greatly enhance the mentalist's credibility.

Two versions of the routine are described. One is designed for use with a single participant and may be performed anywhere. The second is designed for presentation in a platform, banquet hall, seminar or corporate setting.

The special photographs used in the effects are included in the manuscript. Once the underlying principles are mastered, however, any set of appropriate photographs may be used.

URV is one of the most powerful and memorable pieces of mentalism you will ever present.

1st edition 2008; 25 pages.

Table of Contents

page

Introduction

Unified Remote Viewing

Phase One

Phase Two

Props Required

Analysis and Methods

Afterthoughts

Appendix

21st Century Q&A

The Question Answering Act - or "Audience Reading" as it is more commonly called today - has always been the major effect in mentalism. Q&A, while arguably the most powerful and memorable effect in mentalism, is rarely seen today because it does not fit into the "body language/ perceptionist" persona and style - its only explanations would appear to be pure mind reading or, as it was originally presented, communication with the spirits.

Here, in this ebook for the experienced mentalist - is a complete collection of original modern methods and, more importantly - presentations - for this classic routine.

In 21st Century Q&A you will find presentations that suit the modern performing persona and methods that defy detection. And, as in all of Bob's routines, the emphasis is on subtlety rather than electronics, secret assistants, etc.

Besides the great historical points and performance instructions, you will also learn what can only be called a true 'Cassidy': How to bend a wire coat hanger into a multipurpose stand.

1st edition 2008; 25 pages.

Table of Contents

page

Origins and Ethics

The Evolution of Q&A

The Amazing Criswell

The Hanussen Switch Bag

Basic Hanussen style routine

Adaptation of the sequence to a straight Q and A routine

The Jazz Approach

21st Century Q&A

As Seen by an Imaginary Critic

The Elements and Analysis

Appendix

A Journey Through the 4th Dimension

A complete history of what Bob believes to be the greatest effect in mentalism, including all of the variations and methods developed over the years.

4th Dimensional Telepathy is a complete act in and of itself. Whereas the original methods utilized forces, impression devices, etc., the methods revealed herein do not. All of the spectators' selections are absolutely free.

The Basic Effect

In all of the versions described in this ebook, the effect of Fourth Dimensional Telepathy is the same or very nearly so. Only in Bob's first variant, "Ultimate Fourth Dimensional Telepathy" did he adopt a handling that was visually different from Annemann’s original and Bob's later variations.

A generic description of the effect, as perceived by an astute spectator, would go something like this:

One spectator thinks of a name and writes it on a piece of paper. A second volunteer writes down the name of a pet. Both fold their papers and are asked to seal them in pay-type envelopes, and then to hold them up to the light to verify that they cannot see through them. A third spectator is handed a slip of paper and asked to draw a picture. He too folds his slip and seals it in an envelope. The performer collects the envelopes and numbers them 1, 2, 3. They are then given to another audience member for safe-keeping. The performer does his concentrating bit, and writes something on a large pad which is placed face down on the lap of a spectator in the front row. He then asks for envelope number ''1 ,'' tears it open, removes the slip and reads it aloud. The spectator with the pad turns it over showing that the performer's impression was correct. The slip of paper is returned to its owner.

The same procedure is followed with the second spectator, but when the performer gets to the third volunteer the procedure is changed. The mentalist takes the third envelope and crumples it up. He puts it in his pocket, without ever opening it, and hands the third
volunteer a large pad and a magic marker. The volunteer is asked to draw the same picture he drew before, but much bigger, so that everyone can see. The performer turns his back to the volunteer while this is done and draws a picture on a large pad of his own. The climax is
reached when it is shown that the drawings match.

Contents:

Introduction

The Two Eras of Modern Mentalism

Mentalism and the Fourth Dimension

The Fourth Dimension – it's all about time and timing

The Basic Effect

Annemann's Fourth Dimensional Telepathy

The Transparency Method

The "Backwards" One-Ahead Method

Time Out

My Original Approach

Ultimate Fourth Dimensional Telepathy - 1977

THE SHIRT POCKET MIND READER

THE THREE ENVELOPE TEST - 1982

The Three Envelope Test - 1996

A Sure-Fire Prediction

The Pocket Dump - 1988

The Shaxon Flap Envelope

Later Routines and Developments

Swami Variant - 2001

Bluff Variant and Out - the No Gimmick Approach

1st edition 2007; 34 pages.

The Mag-Eye Move Revisited

In 1981 Al Mann devised a billet tear he called the "Mag-Eye" move. He enthusiastically demonstrated it for Bob Cassidy and gave him a copy of the manuscript, Phanta Graphs in which he had first described it.

Some time later, after playing around with the move, Bob devised a substantially different approach and a handling that allowed secret access to a much larger area of the billet. Bob also gave Al some of his ideas regarding the proper type of paper that had to be used to insure that the move worked smoothly as well as a presentational gambit that justified the use of a pre-folded billet.

Al was ecstatic and immediately went about typing up a manuscript which he released as The Mag-Eye Move Supreme. He credited Bob as its co-author.

The manuscript didn't explain Bob's handling as he described it to Al. As was his style, he wrote up his own version of it with a maximum of enthusiastic hyperbole. He didn't include the handling and routine Bob had devised. Instead, he described another variation of the move that he said was "inspired" by Bob's version. The move never really caught on among mentalists probably because Al omitted the critical details of handling and routining that made the move clean, logical, and virtually foolproof.

Over the years Bob has often been asked about his handling of the move and the modification and routine he actually showed him over twenty years ago. Here it is.

1st edition 2008; 9 pages

Artful Mentalism

On February 26th 2009 a historic event took place. Bob Cassidy gave a one-of-a-kind two hour teleseminar which was hosted by his longtime student and friend Michael Weber.

Two hours of pure Cassidy where he answered questions and spoke on a number of crucially important points on mentalism. Some of the topics discussed were:

Persona: Selecting effects consistent with your persona; choosing a persona; credibility; the Dr. Crow persona.

Rehearsing: How to practice mentalism.

What is bad mentalism?

Scripts versus Improvisation

Mentalism versus Mental Magic

Publicity stunts

Logical disconnect: The importance of preventing the possibility for spectators to back trace the method.

and a lot more...

Bob also explained several of the points he wanted to make on concrete examples, effects he uses or used in his professional stage program, such as his Russian Roulette routine.

Additionally to the two hour MP3 you will receive two PDFs. One is the pre-seminar lecture notes that everybody received before the seminar started. And the other is a post-seminar PDF where Bob followed up on many questions submitted by listeners.

[This event was sponsored by Tony Blake, Jerome Finley, Jheff Poncher, and Chris Wasshuber.]

1st edition 2009; 2 hours

One Man Billet Routines

". . . I have found most uses of billets that I've seen to be painful exercises in self-deception on the part of the performer, as to what the audience finds convincing or entertaining. But when I saw Bob Cassidy do his billet routine
for an audience of more than a thousand, those silly bits of paper were reduced to virtual non-entities. By the time the routine reached its conclusion he was on stage, standing back-to-back with a spectator, engaged in what was apparently a full scale drawing duplication - with no billets or envelopes
anywhere in sight or awareness." - Jamie Ian Swiss, Genii, The Conjurors' Magazine, January 2005

Here is wonderful billet work explained by one of its most proficient practitioners.

The Impromptu Psychic

From the introduction: "Seemingly impromptu mental effects are among the
strongest you can do. The apparent lack of preparation is what makes them seem real. But never forget that it is the illusion of impromptu, and not its reality, that gives such effects their impact."

"Impromptu" does not mean unprepared, nor does it refer to the ridiculous notion held by many that to be truly impromptu the effect must be something you can do anywhere, anytime, even if you happen to be totally naked.

Impromptu, more sensibly, refers to the effect on your audience. The effect should either SEEM to have been improvised (the illusion of the first time) or to have been an apparently spontaneous happening.

Impromptu Book Test

Impromptu Murder Mystery

Eye Drops Living and Dead

The Mag Eye Moves and Peeks

The Falling Pen

Fetch Mullica Robin and the Super Prediction

1st edition 2006; 24 pages.

Sleightly Mental

From the introduction:

As far as I'm concerned, sleight of hand (or any other artifice for that matter) has but one purpose - to convincingly establish a false premise, which I believe to be the cornerstone of all effective illusion and deception. The more convincingly that premise is established, the more amazing the resulting effect will appear to be.

The subtleties and psychological approaches of mentalism can, when augmented by sleight of hand, provide a directness and clarity of effect that is too often lacking in mental routines. The fact that sleights are avoided by many performers can only be attributed to the false belief that sleight of hand is extremely difficult or to the misguided belief that artistic mentalism can be achieved with nothing more than a collection of self-working, commercially available effects.

The sleights illustrated and taught in Sleightly Mental can, if properly mastered, be of immeasurable value to the mentalist. Some of them are variations of classic moves and others - notably the "out of pocket" technique - provide new approaches to popular mental effects. They are all within the reach of the average performer who is willing to give them the practice and rehearsal they deserve.

Sleightly Mental consists of two complimentary works - the ebook itself and nine video clips, which show the various moves in action. This, I believe, is the most effective way of showing exactly how the moves work and just how they appear to an audience.

While each of the moves can be applied in a multitude of effects, the following, if presented as described in the text, comprise a complete routine of close-up mentalism:

ESP Card Matching

The Quarter Bend

The Koran Center Tear

Out of Pocket Writing

The Erdnase Bottom Deal

These effects are described in the text accompanying each move.

1st edition 2003; 21 pages; 9 WMV video clips.

Confessions of Dr. Crow

Most cyclical stacks are based on either mathematical progressions (Si Stebbins) or nonsense rhymes (“Eight Kings” and John Mulholland’'s “Hungry Jackass.”) While memorized stacks, such as the Nikola explained in Encyclopedia of Card Tricks, allow for the fastest determination of a cards position in the pack, performers who don'’t use the set-up generally seem to avoid the memory route. The mathematical systems, which serve as substitutes for memory, can sometimes be difficult in performance situations. Furthermore, many of the mathematical formulas only allow you to determine the position of a given card, and not the card at a given position.

Hence the “Ring Stack.” It is a new type of cyclical stack, with a few simple “anchors” that allow for the quick determination of a card’s location or the identity of a card at a given number. Unlike other cyclical stacks, it is not based on mathematics or rhymes. Instead, it is based on a few words, some basic (very basic) mnemonics and a bit of logic. With a minimal amount of practice, it can be mastered in a few hours.

As a bonus you get two card stack unrelated impression devices: "Dr. Crow's Address Book", and "The Kiwi Board". Both are ingenious if you ask me. The address book is diabolic thinking and the Kiwi board is material science at its best!

1st edition 2002; 17 pages.

Bent On Strange

The Ultimate Key Bending Routine.

In the early 1970’s, at the "dawning of the Age of Aquarius," a young
Israeli named Uri Geller attracted worldwide attention with his "psychic" abilities. While he demonstrated several paranormal skills, it was his "psychokinetic" ability to bend silverware, borrowed keys, and nails that set him apart from other "New Age" psychics. In the years that followed many mentalists and magicians added "metal bending" routines to their repertoires, and many sleights and gimmicks have been devised to facilitate the effect.

You may have noticed that most of the modern material on the subject
deals with silverware and coins. Key bending seems to have fallen by the
wayside. This is unfortunate, for the "psychic bending" of a borrowed key is, in Bob's opinion, the strongest effect of the genre. It also makes a performer’s subsequent coin, nail, or silverware bending far more effective.

1st edition 2002; 18 pages.

Hoodoo Brew

"The Man at the Crossroads" is a close-up routine based on a uniquely American form of folk magic known as "hoodoo". Sometimes used as a synonym for Voodoo (a term related to the Dahomean word for spirit, vodun, and the more generalized West African juju), "hoodoo" technically refers to magical practices sometimes known as "conjure" - a hybrid of African and European beliefs nowadays far removed from their original West African religious roots - and is comprised of complex magical practices as well as simple medicinal procedures. (Practitioners, however, usually refer to the latter as "signs" rather than "conjure" or "hoodoo".)

Unlike Hoodoo, which is completely non-denominational, Voodoo is primarily a body of religious practices - although many modern believers refer to themselves as "spiritualists" to avoid the stereotypical concept of Voodoo as a system of sticking pins in dolls and cursing enemies.

For those interested in delving more deeply into the historical materials Bob used in writing this routine, we have included source materials on the "Background and Reference" page.

Bob has tried to treat this subject with the respect due any widely held belief system, while at the same time focusing primarily on the entertainment value of the routine. Presented with the proper balance of humor and drama, "The Man at the Crossroads" has proven to be a very entertaining and mystifying presentation.

This ebook also includes a PDF version of The Conjure Woman by Charles W. Chesnutt, 1899.

1st edition 2003; PDF 35 pages; 3 WMV video clips

3 Miracles

The title is apt. This ebook contains three completely inexplicable mental effects: "Quarterforce", "Boxed Thought", and "The Impossible Switch".

In Quarterforce a pack of cards is fanned out before a spectator. There are no duplicates or specially printed cards. The spectator simply thinks of one and the mentalist names it. That's it and it's that clean. Mentalism doesn't get any bolder or more powerful than this.

Boxed Thought is a completely routined demonstration of telepathy and clairvoyance and The Impossible Switch is just that - a billet move so clean and simple it is never detected.

1st edition 2003; 24 pages; 2 MPG video clips.

Mind Burners

Mind Burners - illustrated with color photographs and videos of each critical move, features two completely routined performance pieces from Bob's own working repertoire. "The Manchurian Gambit" is a demonstration of "psychic brainwashing", based on Richard Condon's novel and John Frankenheimer's 1962 film classic, "The Manchurian Candidate". An audience member, completely unaware of what he or she is doing, follows the mentalist's psychic commands. Not only completely amazing, this is one of the funniest and most memorable routines Bob has ever performed.

In "A Place to Die For" an ancient secret provides the key to a modern mental miracle. A spectator rolls a die and concentrates on any city of his or her choice. The mentalist reveals the number on the die as well as the selected city. There are no forces, special gimmicks or impression devices used.

A special bonus effect, "Mind Burn", rounds out this package. It illustrates "pyrokinesis", the power of mind over fire. If you have ever used a PK type magnet, this will be of special interest to you. I'll bet you didn't know that it was possible, and quite easy, to extinguish a candle flame with a hidden magnet. The effect is positively eerie and everything may later be thoroughly examined if you so desire.

1st edition 2003; 24 pages; 2 WMV video clips

The Millennial Medium

Near the end of the 19th century - a time believed by many to be the birth of a "New Age"- presentations of mediumship and other so-called psychic phenomena had already become standard theatrical attractions. Samri Baldwin ("The Only Real and Original White Mahatma") had long since developed the one-ahead based question answering act, and the secret writing techniques of Henry Slade and other early mediums had become standard items in the repertoires of many conjurors. Some engaged in actual and pseudo exposures of mediums and psychics, while others, recognizing the power of such presentations, quietly adapted the mediums' methods and added "psychic mysteries" to their own programs.
Some did both. In other words, at the dawn of the 21st Century, nothing much has changed.

In The Millennial Medium Bob presents to you several modern handlings that can be used to powerfully recreate the phenomena once known as "spirit writing." Unlike most of the material Bob has released, this compilation focuses primarily upon physical, rather than psychological or presentational techniques.

You are, of course, not limited to using these moves for the re-creation of spiritualistic phenomena. Their applications are only limited by your imagination.

Several of the moves Bob shows are borrowed from card techniques. Each technique is demonstrated and explained in a Quicktime video clip.

Swami who?

The Slates

The Chalkwriter

The Turnover

The Double Turnover

The Double Turnover Revealed

The Crossover Slates

The Crossover Revealed

The Jaks Move

The Rag Switch

The Rag Switch Revealed

1st edition 2005; 11 pages; 10 Quicktime video clips
