A few years ago my wife and I were in San Francisco in business and had some free time. I decided to show her the Presidio where I was stationed at Letterman Army Hospital and worked in a closed mental ward called S-1. We drove through the gates and I was shocked that the hospital was gone as well as all of the beautiful colonial officers' homes, all the barracks, staff buildings and particularly S-1, the free standing, closed mental ward. All the happy and unhappy memories that happened at S-1 came back to me along with my thoughts of my basic Army training where one half of my company was either killed or injured during training, the medical schooling and my unbelievable time at S-1. I said to my wife, Stephanie that I should write a book first about my time in basic training then medical schools and most importantly as to what went on at S-1 - from a snake-pit to a fine rehabilitation center.
