A young man just out of the U.S. Army right after World War II, Mike Bellows is just trying to fit in to civilian life. He has an alcohol addiction picked up from when he was trying to escape the horrors of war, and his only work knowledge before entering the army is from helping his father at the family sawmill. Fortunate enough after the war to find a job in a small New England town as a sawyer, Mike still is unable to adjust to family life, and he strikes out on his own.
Trouble with relationships, commitments, and vehicle mishaps hamper him from fitting into society, but there is one thing Mike can always count on in life: his dedication to his work. After all he has been through, will that be enough to set him on track?
