The Diviner, the religious and political leader of Wisland, is resting on his deathbed. Chief among his potential successors is Talos Wall, a discretely irreverent cleric. Linne Redwater, Talos' once lover and the wastrel heiress to a dwindling family fortune, has returned to the capital. Duncan Camrose, a respected academic, is embarking on a quest to vindicate the existing social order amid turmoil instigated by Talos' school of naturalism. Tam, a hulking knave for hire, finds employment with Duncan in the capital after remitting Etta, a young country orphan, into the care of the state. A drought is devastating this year's harvest and tensions between utilitarian and religious values are running high as Wisland teeters on the precipice of change.
