As we watched the sun slowly move down to the earth and fall out of view, I was overcome with an incredible feeling of gratitude for the blessing of all the love and beauty in my life. I was internally grateful to God for sparing our lives in the most heinous manmade conflict of hatred and prejudice, sadly forever known to American history as the second part of World War II. Although it didn't take long before the moment quickly became bittersweet as a flash from the past echoed relentlessly through my brain. I suddenly remembered a quote that Adolf Hitler made in Old Germany with the intent to gain support of the young people of that time. He strived for a "Thousand Year Reich." His plan was to build an empire that would last for one thousand years. Hitler's empire was the Third Reich, which was the third German Empire known to history. It seemed so easy to buckle a nation of good people to its knees, and the thought of a Fourth Reich would forever be etched in my brain. With the enemy quickly fleeing the country with their tales tucked between their legs, America had a second chance to get it right. Hard lessons were taught to mankind at an unfathomable expense. As survivors, we all had to assume the responsibility to pass this knowledge on to future generations to assure nothing of this nature could ever be repeated.
