On September 11, 1973, Professor Gryphus is awakened by the gods as a military coup begins in Chile. In reality, Gryphus is Condor, Chile's shaman and king of birds. Now, both country and shaman are in danger of extinction-as are truth, justice, and liberty. Ten years after the coup, the gods ask Condor to find Chilenos brave enough to speak the truth about the dictatorship. High in the Andes, Condor's mate wants their chick to hatch in a democracy and agrees Condor must "free the country from the stench of death." Twelve Chileans agree to talk: Rita speaks of her father's flight to Perl; Antonia divulges her knowledge of a teacher's murder, and Luisa informs journalists of the pervasion of fear into Chilean life. Elena reveals her father's true identity while Felisa uses the Internet to disclose her story. Constanza's story is about the loss of human rights. Marta speaks the truth of the infamous Caravan of Death, and Tessa publishes her brother's diary, which reveals truths of Chile's tall ship, the Esmeralda. Father Juan Carlos speaks against the regime in order to save his soul, and journalist Esteban uses TV's international news programs to tell the world of murder and exile. Libertad is the last woman to tell her story in which she reveals why she left Chile at the same time as truth, justice, and liberty. The book ends as Condor welcomes Libertad back into Chile on the same day a new shaman is hatched.
