Survivors of the Joplin, Missouri tornado tell many stories in this book: of running for their lives, children torn from their mothers' arms, and being swept into the funnel of the hellish EF-5 tornado that on May 22, 2011, killed 158 people. In the wreckage of the nearby hospital, doctors and nurses worked by flashlight to save lives.
Yet the historic tornado has another story, untold until now. Young survivors of the wrath of this monster storm, none over the age of twelve, began telling parents and teachers about the bright winged beings - or "butterfly people" - who shielded them as the massive tornado passed over them. Could it be that when the devil came to Joplin, the angels came too?
About the Author:
Bonney Hogue Patterson calls herself "an accidental author." Hospitalized from a concussion due to a slip on a patch of ice, she was sidelined from my usual routine. The topic of her first book, Hunted in the Heartland: A Memoir of Murder, began that day to be played out in the media. A recent break in a cold case led to a domino effect of confessions to several cold cases, including a murder in one of her past neighborhoods.
After the publication of Hunted she returned to substitute teaching until the devastating tornado of May 22, 2011, struck Joplin, Missouri. A Midwesterner with fairly close-up acquaintances with tornadoes, she was deeply sympathetic. One blog site she happened onto was holding a hot debate-stories of Angels appearing at the height of the raging storm were emerging from children, none over the age of 12. Postings were leaning strongly toward the children's version of events. She was hooked.
Subsequent research indicated that not only were there abundant stories of struggle and heroics, and ministering earthly angels, but, perhaps, also more Heavenly ones were in Joplin that day. She hopes you find the characters in the book, titled after a popular Joplin saying, to be as warm and inspiring as she has.
