The author, Tony Ayles, is a native of Ljubljana, Slovenia. He completed the study for Mechanical Technician in his hometown. In The Eternal Expatriate, Part One, he first describes his grandparents and parents. The story then continues from the earliest memories of his own. At the age of fifteen, he discovers there are two kinds of people: boys and girls, and had a few affairs already in his student years. By 1962, Slovenia opened for western tourists. He met a Dutch teacher of English. He showed him his beautiful homeland on an extensive tour on bicycles, as well as some mountaineering. His English benefited considerably from that association. At the age of twenty, he met some vital contacts that helped him find the kind of job in England that was his ambition. He promised his mother to return after a year, but he could never fulfill that promise.
