This is a very powerful routine. So powerful, in fact, that David has kept it to himself for over twenty years! It is perfect for all performers regardless of their performing venue. That's right. This is a card trick that can be performed anytime and anywhere. It can be performed close-up or on stage even though it uses a standard deck. It is totally impromptu, uses no gimmicks, has audience participation, and you are not touching the cards when the magic happens. The magic takes place while the cards are in the hands of the spectators! Here is the effect (in a close-up performance):
The deck is separated into two piles. One pile contains all of the black cards while the other pile contains all of the red cards. This is shown very clearly and very cleanly, as there is no trickery involved. The spectator now selects which pile she would like to select a card from (totally free choice! No equivoque!). This pile is given to her. Say it is the red pile.
She looks though the cards and selects any one she likes and signs it. The selection is placed on the table, and the red pile is also tabled. The tabled selection is now cleanly placed back into the red pile, which is left face down on the table and is never touched by the magician.
The black pile is now shown to consist of nothing but black cards as it should be. It is tabled face up on the table. The performer makes a magical gesture over each pile. The spectator now picks up the red pile and deals the cards face up one at a time onto the table. The selection has vanished! The black pile is spread by the spectator, and in the center of the face up cards is a single face down card. It is removed by the spectator, and is shown to be the signed selection!
