The Hunt by Andrew C. Watzek

When Adam "Mac" McCulough loses his wife, Abby, in 1876, he is left to bring up his four young daughters, Sara, Becky, Julie, and Angela. Mac, a rancher and the sheriff of nearby Elkhorn, calls on his longtime friend Ezra Hawks, a half-White Mountain Apache, to help him on his ranch and to raise his girls. Together, the men teach the daughters to shoot, hunt, fish, track, and survive in the wild. Life rolls along for this unusual family, but an incident from Mac's past comes back to haunt him. Before settling down with Abby, he worked as an Arizona Ranger and played a key role in the capture and conviction of a group of men who beat and raped a family in Prescott. The men, now released from jail, track down Mac and exact their revenge. Sara, Becky, Julie, and Angela are determined not to let the men get away with the murder of their father. They strike out on their own to hunt down the killers, but their quest for vengeance may come with a high price.

Loved this book. It was captivating all the way through. Non-stop page turner. He captured all the characters so well that you can visualize them in your mind as you read. His knowledge of the old northern Arizona country and a way of living showed in his writing. Makes you want to go exploring northern Arizona to see the beautiful country he discribes in his book. This book makes you smile, laugh and cry so have tissues ready. I hope Mr. Watzek continues to write more books, maybe even a sequel to The Hunt to see how the daughters lived on without their father and how they used all the skills they learned from Hawk and their father. Great writing for a first timer!!

Wow I totally enjoyed reading this book. It was non-stop reading page after page just to see what was going to happen next. Grab some tissues with this one. It will make you smile, laugh and cry. Andrew Watzek wrote an excellant book. He shows he did his homework because writing about the Arizona history back in those days his knowledge showed in his writing. Makes me want to go up north to Northern Arizona just to see some of the beautiful country he drescribes in his book. Great first time writing Mr. Watzek. Hope there will be more books to follow. Maybe even a sequel to this one to see how the daughters did in their lives all alone and on their own using all the skills they learned from Hawk and their dad. Loved it!
