The new aliens swarmed toward the remaining dropship. The first one, smoldering still, tried to rise above the cloudcover. Walker watched as energy blasts streaked up toward them. The pilot banked expertly, bringing the ship rapidly out of range before any shots could damage the vessel. The damaged dropship, unable to get high enough, took two more blasts of energy to its ventral surface. The energy rapidly ate through the layers of hardened titanium alloy ribbing and began to feed on the fuel cells. As Walker watched, one erupted, sending the craft into a death roll. The pilot apparently tried to compensate, but three more energy shots struck his cockpit. It disintegrated with a blast of energy, and the crippled dropship plummeted from the sky and exploded into the Coberla soil. Walker watched in horror as the new aliens rapidly pounced on the craft, dragging away the dead bodies of Zulu and Alpha squadrons. Coberla was lost. In this sequel to his first novel, The Inevitable, Mike Wareing ups the action yet again. With their armies scattered and with a tenuous pact all that is holding the once-warring factions of the Foe and Kylthon together, Salir and the General must dismantle the Viccen hordes once and for all. But rebellions are springing up, and the Viccen have a few secrets of their own.
