Ian moved to Cornwall to write his book on supernatural creatures and cryptids, wanting to be close to Dozmary Pool because of the alleged paranormal activity associated with it. He also wished to be close to his lover, Phillip. But the roads near the pool are dark and silent, and when the night settles, strange creatures slink among the knolls and forgotten graves. After Ian receives some devastating news from his beloved, he chooses to walk home to his little centuries-old farmhouse. But it is night, and the mists are coming in, and Ian is drunk on far more than his grief when he hears a noise that freezes his heart - faint, echoing hoof beats. It may just be someone out for a midnight canter. But the sound has a hollow quality that Ian does not like, and Dozmary Pool would be an ideal home for the fearsome Scottish Water-Horse, known more commonly as the Kelpie.
